Study of the biocompatibility of titanium alloys processed by powder metallurgy

The processing of titanium and its alloys by means of powder metallurgy (PM) techniques is a suitable way to reduce the fabrication cost of metallic components and to adjust their compositions to the requirements of orthopaedic devices. The researchers of MULTIMAT-CHALLENGE have optimized the processing parameters to obtain different titanium alloys by means of PM. However, it is unknown whether these materials are biocompatible. The PhD student will study their corrosion, wear and tribocorrosion properties in biological media, as well as the response of human cells (osteoblasts, macrophages, stem cells…) to the titanium-based materials.
